The Watcher, the Warrior and the Oracle

Some experiences can’t be written down except in story form. Sometimes they are simply unbelievable although true, sometimes names need to be changed to protect the innocent, sometimes we’re afraid of being sued. Thus was born The Watcher, the Warrior and the Oracle. It’s gotten a bit too long, so the latest chapter is below. For those new to this page, start at Chapter 1.

Chapter 1

Once upon a time there was a Warrior and an Oracle. The Watcher wasn’t there but explained everything to the Oracle later.
The Warrior and the Oracle were discussing philosophy and life direction. The Oracle explained one path to the Warrior and he chose to take it. Then the Oracle received a message from a black cat – ” you are to prevent a great wrong”. She told the Warrior and they parted. Some time later the Warrior found that something valuable was missing – a chain of office in which he set great store. While on a quest to seek it he met the Oracle. But danger threatened. The Oracle spoke the necessary words and the Warrior protected her. Afterwards, the Warrior’s chain was magically restored to him because he had passed the first test on his path.

Chapter 2

This is the story of how the Oracle became the Oracle.
Once she was an ordinary child. Then she was taught how to speak to ordinary people and persuade them to her point of view. She was quite good at that, but it made her uncomfortable. She preferred speaking the truth but most people didn’t want to hear that. When she grew up she was shown the path and took her first steps along it. Some of the people she met along the way preferred to hear the truth as well. As she grew older, she lost her way and strayed from the path to a place where people preferred to hear lies. She didn’t see that she had strayed from the path because the people around her told her she was on the right track. She chose to believe them and so she lost her sight. Then she stumbled and fell. The people who picked her up were not liars but truth-sayers and true friends and they set her on the true path again. Then her sight began to return. The Watcher gave her the name of Oracle because her words had power.

Chapter 3

This is the story of how the Warrior became the Warrior.
Once he was an ordinary child, but he had a fierce heart. The other children could see his power and were jealous. But their jealousy only made his heart stronger. As he grew, he knew that he was a Warrior, but he needed to grow into his armour. As soon as he was old enough, he was apprenticed out of his village. He was happy to go, because he had never felt comfortable there. But this was only a step on his journey, for as soon as the chance came, he ran away to be a soldier. His fierce heart, which had caused jealousy and disruption in his home village, was exactly what he needed to become a very good soldier indeed. He became a leader of men, and was well loved. This is when he earned the name of Warrior. Because of his strength, he was sent to the fiercest and most unwinnable battles, and his fierce heart took a thousand tiny wounds. He lost his strength, and gave up fighting in order to recover. He wandered many paths, searching for healing, until finally he met the Oracle.

Chapter 4

This is the story of how the Watcher became the Watcher. She was an anxious and an angry child, who became wilder as the years went on. Her parents despaired of her and she despaired of herself. The gods had given her gifts, but she was squandering them. When she reached adulthood, the gods decided that they must intervene, or she would not survive to fulfil her purpose in life. They created an accident which left her body broken but her mind intact. This forced her into slowing down and becoming the Watcher. She currently lives in a cave and the Oracle visits her for wisdom, advice and insight.

Chapter 5

The Oracle knows another person journeying along the path. He turns up unexpectedly and she knows him by the name of The Shaman. He plays the music of the land and the snake is his totem. The Shaman was badly hurt some years ago, and spent many years living in a cave. Recently, he emerged from the cave and told the Oracle that it was time he went on another journey. On this journey, he will truly earn the name of Shaman, but he doesn’t know that yet, nor does he know his true name. He only knows that he needs to go.

Chapter 6

The Oracle was recently given a sign. This was in the form of a burn on her right wrist in the shape of a crow with one wing outstretched. The Oracle went to the Watcher for advice. The Watcher recognised the sign as one of the Morrigan’s. The Morrigan deals with death and transformation. This new path has made the Oracle afraid. Perhaps some would be happy to have such a clear sign. But the Oracle feels she is being pushed from behind. Since then, she has been asked to bury the bones of two animals which died alone and in pain, and to free the spirit of a drowned child. The bones she could do, the child she was not allowed to do, although she has to power to do so. To refrain from acting is a hard test.
